Teacher Tip #1 – There is a web site www.freerice.com that allows students to play vocabulary word games on line and by answering the questions correctly, donate free rice to the United Nations Food Bank. Once on the site, you just have to click on the tab “subjects” and under Foreign Language choose Spanish. There are 10 levels of difficulty with Level I being the easiest. As you are playing, you see the kernels of rice filling the dish on the screen. There is immediate feedback to let you know if you are right or wrong, and if wrong what the correct answer is.
Teacher Tip #2 – while researching Venezuela, I learned that “pincha” is how Venezuelans say “click”!
Teacher Tip #3 – The last week of January, I took a small group of students on an afterschool adventure to the Hicksville Gregory Museum on Heitz Place in Hicksville (516.822.7505. The museum hosts collections of rocks and butterflies, an old jail, and a store! There is a self-guided tour available in Spanish for the butterfly exhibit. The museum has about 10 MP3 players, and a teacher from Hicksville High School speaks in Spanish (English also available) about some of the butterfly exhibits in an easy to listen to, clear voice.
The curator, Mr. Curran was a wonderful host, delighting the students with interesting information about the butterflies and rocks. They enjoyed seeing the jail and the special glow in the dark rock display. Of course, the best part of the trip for some was the store!
There is no charge for Hicksville residents, and a nominal charge for out of district guests.
After the museum, we had dinner at La Finca, a Colombian Restuarant at 170 Broadway in Hicksville (516.935.0951). Although a small restaurant, we dined on the excellent food prepared at the Restaurant. Paella was a popular choice. The Tres Leches dessert was phenomenal. I enjoyed Cerdo A la Parilla, a treat I had never had before, although I spent a summer in Colombia. There is a sister restaurant in Farmingdale.

Teacher Tip #4 “Hoy Vívelo” website offers you news and ads in Spanish and in English. There is a visual and audio version. Bright and colorful!

This is the first time I have seen this site even though I am a member of AATSP. I attended a workshop a couple of weeks ago and was given the address. I am very new to teaching and I enjoyed all the teacher tips. I was w0ndering, however, if anyone has any ideas for the “beginning of the year/getting to know you” activities? Thank you.
